We all need to reset, get away from the screens, move our bodies and have FUN! We can't make up for the last two year, but we can definitely create the best summer ever! Our goal is to explore everyone's interests and passions all the while developing our physical literacy, feeding our intellectual curiosity and growing our emotional intelligence.

Summer is always a fantastic opportunity to truly be a kid! We kick it old school here and get back to the basics when it comes to Summer Camp!

Our Summer Camp has us biking or scooting everywhere around Long Island City! Join us in visiting various green spaces, taking in the sights and sun and just having a fantastic tech free day!

We stop at every fountain, enjoy the ferry and trips to Governor's Island and Domino Park to name a few. Camp also includes tons of art, tie-dying all the shirts, gardening, cooking and the general shenanigans of rope swings fort building in the gym.

We also make sure to give back and partner with The Connected Chef to volunteer weekly.

Why Bike Training

Why Bike training is great for youth people:

  • Physical Fitness: Bike riding is an excellent form of exercise that promotes cardiovascular health, builds endurance, and improves overall fitness levels. Teenagers at the bike riding summer camp will engage in regular physical activity, strengthening their muscles and improving their physical well-being.
  • Skill Development: Through bike riding, teens can develop and enhance various skills. They will learn proper biking techniques, balance, coordination, and safety practices. As they progress, they may also learn advanced skills such as bike maintenance, trail navigation, and bike repair.
  • Social Interaction: The camp provides an opportunity for teenagers to meet and connect with peers who share a common interest in biking. Through group rides and team-building activities, they can form lasting friendships, develop social skills, and learn to work together towards common goals.
  • Mental Well-being: Engaging in physical activities such as bike riding has numerous mental health benefits. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. The bike riding summer camp allows teenagers to unplug from screens, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the mental rejuvenation that comes from being active outdoors.
  • Fun and Adventure: Above all, the bike riding summer camp offers a fun and adventurous experience for teenagers. It allows them to explore new territories, challenge themselves, and create lasting memories. The camp combines physical activity with enjoyment, making it an exciting and fulfilling summer experience for participants.

CIT Program (Counselor-In-Training): Age 14-18

Through our Summer CIT (counselor - in - training) program, Gantry Kids & Teens hires a limited number of youth, aged 14-18 to begin to train as a counselor for our programming.

CIT’s work directly with Gantry Kids & Teens experienced coaches to lead our camper athletes in daily activities that strengthen their minds, imaginations, and spirits. CIT’s will learn to develop age-appropriate student activities, execute movement & lesson plans, and communicate with students through various structured and unstructured activities.

Mentorship  -  Skill Building   -  Job Training

Each CIT has a one-to-one mentorship with owner, Michele Kelber, and their assigned coach. Through this mentorship, CITs participate in weekly coaching meetings to
learn time management, on-the-job communication skills, and vital executive functioning skills often not highlighted and taught in schools or at home. Mentors work with CITs to address and navigate any barriers to employment or maintaining their role as needed, understanding the importance of supporting our youth in their transition to the job

Teens can directly apply through the below applicaton link. After the application is complete, our staff will review your experience and interest in the program. Interested participants will be asked to come in for a series of interviews to discuss their interests, any past experience, and availability for the program.

FAQ

What is early drop off and late pick up like?

Camp runs 9-5 with early drop for an additional charge. You can arrive anytime from 8AM on. We are working on a late pick up, or rather a late drop off, where we bring the kids home to you anytime between 5:15-6. We’ll discuss a time that works for you. This is for athletes that live in LIC near the gym (waterfront and court square area)

Is there a sibling discount?

There is a 10% sibling discount.

Do you do field trips?

We are a field trip-based camp. We spend about 85% of the day outside! Weekly trips to Governors Island and Domino Park. Other trips include Roosevelt Island, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Astoria Park, McCarren Park & McGorlick Park.

What is the activities schedule?

Stewardship is also a big part of our camps. We attend weekly sessions with Connected Chef, learning about food and where it comes from, composting, and helping pack life line groceries to battle food insecurity in our own communities.

We also partner with the LIC Historical Society to learn about our neighborhoods and the past and future of our communities through kid-friendly walking tours.

Don’t worry, art is also an important expression for us. Tie-Dying is a must and kids have access to art supplies to spur their creativity.

We end the day back at the gym for more free play, swinging on the ropes and rings, building forts, playing games, and general decompression before pick-up.

Do you provide lunch/snack?

Athletes must bring their own lunches, water bottles, snacks, and a back pack to carry them in.

Do you provide bikes?

Athletes must have a bike or a scooter and a helmet each day. No need for locks, one coach is on bike duty!

We bike/scoot on the sidewalk, stopping at every corner. We can cover up to 3-7 miles each day, but don’t worry it’s broken up and we aren’t biking for extended periods of time. We want everyone to have fun and come back after all!

Can my child bring their phone so I can get in touch with them?

We are technology-free. You are welcome to track your child, but we ask that it is in their backpack and stay there for the entire day. In an effort to build trust between our staff and parents as well as your child and our staff, communication should be with Gantry Kids staff, not with your child directly. We are also not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged devices.

What is the teacher:student ratio?

Our coaches have been with us for 2-3 years and are CPR/AED and First Aid certified. We have a strict 6:1 athlete to coach ratio, which often is 5:1. Our founder is an attorney and takes safety incredibly seriously. Each day we go over biking and scooting rules and practice roll call.

What if it's too hot?
Oh and we know it gets HOT out there!  Almost every day the kids can hit the fountains at whatever playground we are visiting! We also incorporate water balloons and plenty of cooling off activities!

We are also working on our pool permit so the kids can take a swim once a week!

AND...
Each athlete gets a Gantry Kids logo T-shirt!

Summer Camp is a time to create memories, be outside and experience nature and everything our great city has to offer! Take a step back and let the kids dive into the best summer of their life.
